"My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style." - Maya Angelou
I moved to Alaska from California in 1992. My father was in the Air Force and stationed at Elmendorf, AFB. After high school, my plans were to complete my first year of college at the University of Alaska Anchorage, then venture back down to the lower 48 to continue there. My venture came to fruition, yet eight months later, I made the decision to return to Anchorage. I have now been in Alaska for over 30 years.
In 2000, I began my career in the mental health field working in residential services with Alaska Children's Services (nka Alaska Child & Family) providing care to adolescent boys and girls as a psychiatric treatment counselor. I received my Bachelor's in Human Services in 2003 from the University of Alaska Anchorage and went to work with children, youth, and families as a case manager within the Family Services department at the Arc of Anchorage. I assisted families in creating treatment plans centered around their child's disabilities, identify the resources available to them through their child's Medicaid waiver, and scheduled rehab support services in their home. To gain more knowledge and experience within the mental health field, the Arc of Anchorage provided me the opportunity to become a case manager within their mental health department.
I returned to school to obtain my Master's of Science in counseling through Southern New Hampshire University and graduated in 2009. I worked as a clinical therapist for Anchorage Community Mental Health (nka Alaska Behavioral Health) On-Target school-based program. I provided group psychotherapy, individual and family therapy, as well as summer programming. My desire to learn and work with adults in other areas of the behavioral health field led me to Alaska Pacific University as Director of Counseling and Disability Services. In the director role, I ran the Wellness Center; a safe place for students and staff to receive counseling services. I worked closely with the professors of the counseling psychology Master's program to supervise the students who were completing their internship with the Wellness Center. Also in my role as Director, I provided assessments and resources to students who experienced disabilities and needed accommodations to successfully graduate their program. In 2015, I returned back to my roots of residential counseling as Clinical Director for a 60 bed facility. I supervised the Master's level floor staff, provided supervision to the clinical therapists, and created an evidence-based curriculum for the patients and residents of the facility. I am proud of all of accomplishments and treasured every moment with the people I have served over the years. I am proud to say that I will continue to serve the community through my own practice; where I will provide services to children, youth, adults, couples, and families in an humanistic and compassionate manner.
Welcome to Mims Counseling Services (MCS) and I look forward to working with you! Dannon O. Mims, MS, LPC-S
